The Egan report, Rethinking Construction (1998) highlighted the fragmented nature of the industry and illustrated a need for radical behavioural change to improve industry performance. To enable improvement, the report encourages the application of performance tools and techniques such as benchmarking to measure performance and drive improvement. Egan also suggests changes in the project process to improve industry performance.
10 years on, the construction sector remains fragmented and developments in information and communication technology (ICT) have dramatically changed the way organisations operate on a daily basis. To ensure innovation and to improve the competitiveness of the industry, current ICT practices need to be benchmarked to guide future research.
CIRIA, in conjunction with the University of Salford are embarking on a club project Benchmarking ICT on competitiveness and innovation in the construction industry (Prop 2801). For further information and to get involved in this project email Camilla Vote at CIRIA. Anyone funding the project will also have a chance to join the steering committee and ensure how industry is best represented.
