Plans are underway to develop guidance on retrofitting surface water management
(Proposal 2441) infrastructure.
A variety of guidance already exists for new development. However, there is a lack of information available for dealing with a legacy of inadequate urban drainage in many of the UK’s cities and towns – a problem that has been highlighted by recent flooding.
The project will examine research and initiatives from the UK and overseas
and develop generic good practice guidance addressing the challenges of improving
existing infrastructure. This will include a framework for the planning, design
and delivery of retrofit solutions.
This proposal has received support from the joint Defra/Environment Agency
Flood Coastal Erosion Management R&D Programme. Additional funding is
being sought so that this project can get underway.
