Protecting
critical infrastructure from floodingThe loss of essential services, such as electricity, water and communications during major flooding events in the summer of 2007 has elevated whole life management of assets and flood risk management higher up the UK agenda.
The socio-economic disruption created by these events demonstrates that the effects of critical infrastructure failure can be severe, having a direct impact on event management, recovery and ultimately people’s quality of life.
There is a need to ascertain the level of expertise and good practice knowledge, in the field of flood risk management for critical infrastructure, both point (e.g. electricity sub-station) and linear (e.g. road) and prioritisation in planning the management of these assets for extreme weather events of increasing frequency and impact.
To discuss this topic CIRIA is proposing a project to collate information on flood resilience and resistance measures currently adopted by UK infrastructure asset owners, identifying and providing guidance on approaches to improve their planning and adaptation to future flooding as well as drawing from overseas experience.
CIRIA is currently seeking potential funders and partners to be involved in the project.
