CIRIA’s Clients’ Sustainability Club held an informative workshop
on Whole Life Costing (WLC) and the new British Standard in June 2008. The
invitation-only event gave club members a chance to share knowledge and get
one-to-one advice from key experts on how WLC could best work in their businesses.
Andy Green, Director of Faithful & Gould, spoke to club members about
his experience in developing the British Standard and the accompanying Standardized
Method of Life Cycle Costing publication. Stephen Faulkner,
Senior Consultant at Halcrow, then gave club members the opportunity test
a WLC model and explained the principles of WLC model development. Members
discussed their own experiences with WLC and how to ensure it is used to manage
assets sustainably throughout their life rather than just as a cost planning
tool.
The Clients’ Sustainability Club is a group for major construction clients
who want to share their experiences in developing solutions to sustainability
challenges. As well as providing a better understanding of key sustainability
issues through knowledge-sharing and informal bench-marking, the group helps
members find suitable, workable methods and tools to embed sustainability
within their organisations.
To complement the knowledge-sharing between club members, CIRIA and a team
of club partners, all of whom are experts in particular sustainability issues,
provide support and assistance via quarterly workshops and one-to-one support.
Current Club members are:
• BAA
• British Waterways
• Cross Rail
• Environment Agency
• Highways Agency
• Network Rail
If you are a major client organisation and would be interested in joining the club, please email Susan Steensma at CIRIA or telephone Susan on: +44 (0)20 7549 3300.
