Adapting to a climate of change - Capacity building for flood risk management

In association with Interpave, 26th November 2008, Sheffield (Free Event)

The Pitt Review of the 2007 summer floods identifies that the need for greater stakeholder
coordination, leading up to and during the floods, exacerbated the consequences and hampered the relief response. The review recommends clear roles and responsibilities for key stakeholders, working together in an integrated approach. However, although partnerships are regarded by many as the way forward, they can be restricted by institutional barriers, perceptions of risk and a lack of resources and skills.

The principle of capacity building in this context is to provide stakeholders with the skills, knowledge and confidence to overcome the challenges and barriers to implementing sustainable solutions.

This event will provide an overview of the challenges and approaches to develop capacity. It will be of interest to planners and engineers working in and with local authorities, regulatory organisations, as well as those working in the private sector.

Sustainable drainage - getting under the surface?

In association with Interpave, 3rd December 2008, London (Free Event)

Since the devastating floods of Summer 2007 and the subsequent Pitt Review released in 2008, there is a growing interest in surface water management and the use of permeable surfaces around homes and commercial areas. With the launch of Defras’ consultation document Improving surface water management in February 2008, amendments to Permitted Development Rights (effective 1st October, 2008), and the Pitt recommendations there is a focus on local authorities to take the lead on implementation and delivery.

This seminar will provide an open forum for discussion regarding the planning and delivery of improved surface water management within the built environment. It also seeks to explore the options for sustainable drainage and permeable surfaces that are available to practitioners and investigates the relationship between different disciplines delivering sustainable drainage. Case studies will be presented sharing both UK and international experiences. The seminar will also provide an opportunity to engage with industry peers and other relevant stakeholders and improve knowledge transfer as suggested by Pitt.

SUDS Foundation Course

Sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) are arguably one of the most significant developments in urban drainage in recent years. Awareness by practitioners and their implementation in developments is steadily increasing. Practical experience has led to a re-definition of best practice and a greater understanding of basic principles. It is important that practitioners not only have access to the best possible information, but also have the confidence to implement guidance and use SUDS within developments.

These training modules have been developed in partnership with EPG and Robert Bray Associates to complement current regulations and the latest SUDS guidance (The SUDS manual). The training programme will enable practitioners to efficiently plan, design, construct and manage SUDS schemes in accordance with best practice guidance and the relevant legal and regulatory framework.

The future risk of flooding - reflections on the Pitt Review

An LGA Conference, 18th November 2008, London

The flooding last summer was a timely reminder of just how vulnerable communities can be if the critical infrastructure that we rely on is compromised and how vital it is to ensure that plans are in place to minimise the negative impact of flooding, to inform and support local communities as well as to sustain business continuity.

The LGA is staging this one day conference, at the America Square Conference Centre in London, at which Sir Michael Pitt will address the conference and set out the findings of the Pitt Review. The conference will also hear from central government on their response to the findings of the Review and also from local authorities, the Association of British Insurers, the Dutch Municipalities and other key stakeholders.
