home > introduction
The intention of this web-site is to encourage waste reduction and improved resource productivity in the building and civil engineering sectors.
It is the result of a project carried out by CIRIA and Centre for Sustainability (C4S) (formerly Viridis) which sought to take forward the findings of the Biffaward Construction Industry Mass Balance (CIMB) study, (available for free download from www.c4s.info/).
The website provides assistance to the industry through the following sections:
General design and construction good practice
guidance
This guidance provides an indication of the different
areas of management through which resource productivity can be improved.
A distinction has been made between those activities which can affect resource
productivity during the design phase and those which impact on construction
site practice. The guidance in this section is structured around a searchable
database of references and summaries of over 100 existing publications covering
key topics.
Sustainable development criteria
This section allows those involved in the construction industry
to increase their knowledge and awareness of the key sustainable development
issues in relation to procurement of construction materials. Links have
also been provided to other criteria currently in use within the construction
industry.
A guide to material optimisation
This provides an overview of materials which can be processed for use in
higher value applications, what those applications may be, and the required
processes. It is intended to provoke thought on what can be done with waste
materials but also to provide information on what recycled and secondary
materials can be used in place of required primary materials.
Waste management procedures
This introduces the relevant WML regulations for a range of activities involved
in transforming waste materials arising from construction and demolition
into reusable or recovered products. It is an interactive tool from which
relevant information can quickly be found.
Case studies
This section provides examples of how other organisations are approaching
waste reduction. These case studies focus on the topics covered in the
above section, “General design and construction good practice
guidance”.
Model planning policies
The project investigated existing planning policy in England, Scotland and
Wales. As a result of this a paper on model policies was produced and discussed
with selected authorities with the aim of encouraging their adoption more
generally. Details on this paper can be found in this section.
Following CIRIA’s usual practice, the work was undertaken with guidance from the following Advisory Group. CIRIA is grateful to Members for their advice on the study and comments on the draft sections.
