Development of intelligent monitoring of concrete structures (CON120)
The project is a technical study into leading edge monitoring technology,
which should assist in predicting the design life of concrete structures and
managing their maintenance throughout their life. For this work, CIRIA are
working in partnership with Imperial College, whose input is being managed
by Professor Nick Buenfeld.
The objectives of the project are:
- assessment of the validity of existing ‘intelligent’ corrosion
and damage monitoring technologies for concrete structures, drawing on practices
in other industries and historical data
- assessment of existing life prediction models for concrete structures,
comparing predictions against laboratory data and historical materials/structure
performance Definition of critical measurement parameters and the most suitable
technologies
- provision of protocols for data collection and/or interpretation which
can feed into prediction models to enable effective intervention and repairs
- identification of metrology-related developments needed to improve the
design and operation of concrete structures.
- preparation of two CIRIA guides to be entitled ‘Intelligent Monitoring
of the Deterioration of Concrete Structures’ and ‘Models for
Predicting the Life of Concrete Structures’.
- a dialogue with leading UK practitioners with the objective of changing
the way they view these tools and techniques, particularly with respect
to:
- managing structures in a more formal manner
- using life prediction techniques in appropriate situations
- improving knowledge and skills in the use of intelligent monitoring.
Project status
The reports to DTI were submitted in early 2007. The CIRIA guide is still
in preparation and will be published in 2008
Project funders
The project is a contract with DTI National Metrology Directorate under their
Materials Programme.
