Two of the world’s leading authorities and trail-blazers for green roofs Wolfgang Ansel (International Green Roof Association) and Dusty Gedge (Livingroofs.org) will be addressing the World Green Roof Congress. The two-day programme will present expert keynote speakers representing more than ten countries including the USA, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the UK.
Organised by CIRIA in partnership with Livingroofs.org, the 2008 World Green Roof Congress is the first event of it kind to showcase green roofs in the UK. Day one of the Congress offers an overview of green roof implementation, application and benefits and highlights successful projects in the UK and around the world; day two provides insight with work streams on green roof performance and lifecycle implementation. The Congress will highlight latest innovations, research and practice to support the effective delivery of green roofs.
The World Green Roof Congress will take place on 17-18th September 2008, One Bishops Square, London.

Government is being lobbied to introduce “positive policy” to incentivise greater investment in green roof technology, but can this be justified ? Sustainable technologies, such as green roofs, benefit wider society (e.g. improved air quality). A survey being undertaken by Simon Poe at Liverpool John Moores researches whether such benefits are valued in decisions to invest in green roofs.

Green roofs -
Basic principles and design - a 2 day training course
23-24 April 2008, London
Currently in the UK many organisations are championing sustainable buildings. The need to embrace sustainability, biodiversity and adaptation to climate change within buildings is increasingly filtering down to clients and practitioners. The implementation of green roofs can significantly contribute to sustainability in the built environment through realising benefits in the areas of biodiversity, sustainable drainage and thermal performance.
Although green roof technology is mainstream in most of Europe, there is currently little understanding or expertise in the UK. It is important that professionals within the built environment sector develop an understanding of the technology to ensure that implementation of such systems at a local and regional level deliver long term sustainable solutions.
Planners, designers and engineers require access to information and past experience to improve knowledge and build self confidence on the implementation of innovative, imaginative and cost effective green roof solutions.
These sessions have been developed in partnership between CIRIA, the Green Roof consultancy and Livingroofs.org who are working together to deliver Building Greener, guidance on the implementation of green roofs, green walls and other biodiversity features. The training will enable delegates to efficiently plan, design and manage green roofs in accordance with best practice guidance and the relevant regulatory framework.
