Brownfield Risk Management Forum (BRMF)

In recent years, over 10 000 hectares of contaminated land has been remediated in the UK. This will increase as London prepares for the 2012 Olympics.

Although the Olympics offers new opportunities to construction professionals and considerable experience has been gained in managing brownfield projects to date, there is still some scepticism within the construction sector about utilising previously developed sites. In general, brownfield sites still have lower commercial value than greenfield sites. This is in part due to technical, legal, and financial risks associated with previously used sites.

A number of networks have been set up to help construction professionals working on brownfield projects; none of these provide comprehensive and cross-sector support to all construction, environmental, financial and legal professionals. The Brownfield Risk Management Forum aims to fill this gap.

Aims

• Promote cross-sector communication and learning between the technical, financial and legal professionals involved in brownfield projects.
• Encourage sustainable and good practice in procurement of brownfield projects in UK.
• Improve the way that risk and liability are managed in brownfield projects.
• Reduce the perceived negative image associated with brownfield sites.
