The Note considers existing Regulations and Codes of Practice, and the possible results of moves to extend them to, and enforce them on, construction sites.
Available data is reviewed together with the results of a series of measurements taken of noise exposure of a sample of site workers. The Note also makes recommendations for further work that may be necessary.
Evidence reported in the Technical Note indicates that all site workers danger of progressive loss of hearing, ani that general labourers and, surprisingly, supervisory engineers are particularly vulnerable.
The implications for the construction industry of the Health and Safety Commission’s Consultative Document ‘Protection of Hearing at Work’ 1981. are discussed. A recent proposed European Communities Directive on noise, published after the main work of the review was completed, Is summarised in an appendix.
The Note will be of interest to contractors, specialist sub—contractors and bodies using direct labour.
