No manufacturing or building process can achieve absolute accuracy. This variability arises from the inherent nature of building processes, and is characteristic of them. However, if potential inaccuracies are anticipated at the design stage, problems of misfit can be minimised, and rejection of work, delays and expensive remedial measures avoided. Technical Note 113 gives design procedures for three options: choosing details to avoid conflict and specifying normal accuracy; accepting conflict and using or designing types of joint which will accommodate variability, again specifying normal accuracy; or specifying special accuracy where normal variability cannot be accommodated in details or joints. Site procedures discussed include accuracy of the survey and of construction materials and components.
An Appendix sets out graphic details of good design to avoid problems of fit with windows, doors, brickwork, holding down bolts, lifts, fixings to floors, conduits in floors, tiling and masonry. Other Appendices deal with the making specification of accuracy requirements, with check calculations for accuracy.
