Description: The ultimate bearing capacities were determined for joints in which precast concrete beams were connected with in-situ concrete columns by means of vertical steel plates. The following main variables were considered: plate rigidity; effect of bond, friction and shrinkage of the concrete; effect of column precompression; effect of transverse reinforcement close to the plate; effect of asymmetric loading; effect of loading column plates cruciform in plan; and the influence of the shape of the lower edge of the plate.
A series of tests was carried out to determine the effect of loading through plates incorporating a horizontal ledge, and a pilot investigation was carried out to examine the effect of loading through a pair of plates separated by a narrow gap.
Design recommendations are made on the basis of the test results.
