Description: The construction and demolition industries are the second largest generators of controlled waste in the UK and have the opportunity to produce significant and environmental benefits by adopting waste minimisation measures. This review provides details of waste management information gathered during audits of a range of types of construction sites. It offers feedback in designers’ attitudes to waste minimisation and presents guidance on the constraints and opportunities for promoting waste minimisation in construction. Guidance is provided in four key areas: trial projects, standards and specifications, economic influences and experience overseas. Proposals are made for future initiatives and research to improve waste minimisation practices. This is the final book in CIRIA’s series on waste minimisation and recycling (SP133-135).
Keywords: waste minimisation, sustainable construction, sustainable resource use, recycling and reclaimed materials
