The CIRIA Report Embedded Retaining Walls (C580), published in 2003 has become
one of the most important and influential technical guides ever published by
Since 2003 there have been significant advances in many areas of design,
application and construction techniques notwithstanding the introduction of
Eurocodes into UK work practice.
This update to the existing best practice guidance on the selection and
design of vertical embedded retaining walls will include reappraising insitu
stress conditions, further on walls types layout and construction tolerances,
guidance on 2-D and 3-D modelling and much more, as well as ensuring Eurocode
compliance - particularly EC7.
It is also proposed (not essential but highly
desirable) to extend the applicability of C580 beyond walls embedded in stiff
soils to include weak rock and soft clay. This would give the document much
wider application both for the UK and internationally.
aims to help us understand current practice across the industry and to gather your feedback on the existing C580 Report. It will also provide you with an opportunity to express your thoughts on areas that you would like to be included in the update. The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete. Closing date: 6 May 2014.

CIRIA is currently undertaking some ‘enabling’ works with potential funders,
with a view to begin the project in the financial year 2013/14.
