In memoriam – Sir Martin Laing

It is with great sadness that we heard about the recent passing of industry veteran, Sir Martin Laing. Sir Martin was Chairman of John Laing plc from 1985 – 2002 until the sale of its construction arm to create Laing O’Rourke. During his leadership, Sir Martin oversaw many notable projects including Sizewell B, the Second Severn Crossing, airports, hospitals, and schools. He served as Chair of the John Laing Charitable Trust (JLCT) for more than 30 years improving access to skills and education and providing support for the homeless, young people, and communities in the UK and overseas.

Dirk Vennix, Chief Executive, CIRIA commented; “Sir Martin played a crucial role in developing the foundations of the Construction Industry Research and Information Association, what has become more widely known as CIRIA. He was also instrumental in developing and supporting our core research programme. To this day Laing O’Rourke remains an active CIRIA member with sector-leading contributions in our guidance from bridges to modern methods of construction. Sir Martin promoted sustainable development and the environment throughout his career. He will be greatly missed by the industry and the many people whose lives he touched through his charitable work.”
