This comprehensive manual on abandoned mine workings is the result of considerable and painstaking research and consultation with industry experts who have jointly authored and reviewed many of its 17 chapters. It replaces the guidance given in CIRIA SP32 Construction over abandoned mine workings published in 1984. This manual gives a risk-based nonprescriptive approach to the mitigation and remediation of mining legacy issues. It is aimed at regulators, planning authorities, developers, asset owners and operators, consultants and contractors.

The key issues associated with abandoned mine workings are extensive and, in many cases, very complex in their detail. They may be summarised as events, risks and hazards associated with surface subsidence, collapse of shallow mine workings, mine gas and mine water emissions, and historical methods of abandonment.

In addressing these issues the manual is divided into three parts. Part 1 covers the historical background and context, Part 2 explores the residual impacts of past mining, and Part 3 provides guidance on land management and construction in mining areas.
