Groynes in coastal engineering

Join this pre-recorded webinar for an overview of CIRIA's guide 'Groynes in coastal engineering' (C793) covering the design, condition assessment, maintenance and repair of groyne systems. It updates the previous guide 'Groynes in coastal engineering: data on performance of existing groyne systems' (TN135).

Online registration has now closed for this event.  If you would like to register to attend, please complete and return the booking form to James Nguyen.

Background
Groynes often form significant elements of the coastal protection and flood defence schemes around the UK's coast. Their principle purpose is to act as a physical impediment to the movement of material, whether longshore, cross-shore through lateral extensions, or a combination of both. Through this they retain and reorintate the beach as required.

Investment costs associated with their construction, maintenance and decommissioning can be significant. Management practices continue to evolve as research develops, new materials are used and practical experience is shared.

The update to the guide reflects:
The increased use of rock in groyne construction
Materials: more sustainable sources of timber and recycled materials
Variation in maintenance activities, procedures and processes
Future adaptive capacity and flexibility in design and placement
The need to understand groyne performance, deterioration processes and remedial
treatments
Learning from a programme of groyne replacement on the south coast.
