Background
First developed in the 1970s, fibre optic technology is used to transmit information and signals from one place to another and has evolved enabling sensors to measure various parameters including temperature, strain, pressure, and displacement.
The sensors are light weight and have high sensitivity and immunity against electromagnetic fields. These qualities make them suitable for civil and geotechnical monitoring, i.e assessing rock stability, an important component in the design and construction phase of underground excavation.
The construction industry is starting to leverage new techniques including Distributed Fibre Optic sensors which enables continuous, real-time measurements along the entire length of a fibre optic cable. This technology facilitates infrastructure asset management for existing and problematic sites, monitoring deformations and the effects of climate change or natural phenomena such as landslides or earthquakes.
Nevertheless, the approach is relatively new to many construction professionals. This webinar will demonstrate the practical applications of various fibre optic techniques in different site investigation scenarios using case study examples.
