SuDS pillar talk - SuDS and amenity

Join us for a series of SuDS pillar talks as we discuss the delivery of multiple benefits through the four pillars that underpin the CIRIA SuDS Manual: amenity, biodiversity, water quality and flood risk management.

Registration for this event is now closed

Background

Well-designed Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) create fantastic places for people and nature as well as managing the risks of localised flooding and water pollution. These objectives underpin the CIRIA SuDS Manual which supports the delivery of multiple benefits through its “four pillars” of amenity, biodiversity, water quality and flood risk management.

The context, drivers and challenges for SuDS have evolved since the publication of The SuDS Manual in 2015. There’s greater appreciation of the quality of our local environment and with climate and ecological emergencies being declared there is greater awareness of the value of SuDS and their broader contribution to local beauty, quality of life, health and wellbeing and resilience.

The pandemic has highlighted the need for good quality blue and green spaces for people to enjoy and there’s growing momentum to improve biodiversity through initiatives like Biodiversity Net Gain. Communities are also becoming more aware of the challenges of water management whether this be flooding, water scarcity or the poor quality of our streams and rivers.

This series of webcasts will focus on each of the four pillars of SuDS:
11 December SuDS and water quantity
14 December SuDS and water quality
16 December SuDS and amenity
17 December SuDS and biodiversity

National experts knowledgeable in amenity, biodiversity, water quality and flood risk management will provide a brief overview of:
The desired outcomes of The SuDS Manual
The quality of schemes delivered on site
Good and bad SuDS practice
What’s changed since the SuDS Manual
What is likely to, or needs to change for the future

There will also be ample opportunity to pose questions to the experts about progress in delivering the multiple benefits. It is a rare and welcome opportunity to consider progress in delivering good practice and have a conversation in detail about how we can make improvements.
