Background
The BSI published revised standard BS 6164 ‘Health and safety in tunnelling in the construction industry – Code of practice’ which came into effect in October 2019.
This timely document provides the construction industry with regulatory support and reflects advances in technology, techniques and equipment in tunnelling as well as health and safety legislation.
Amongst the principal changes is the recommendation for “continuous real-time monitoring of DPM using light scattering photometry technology should be deployed in enclosed environments.” (section 16.1).
Diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted by diesel engines is a recognised health risk for workers in confined spaces such as underground tunnels, where diesel equipment is operating in confined areas and workers are subject to potentially hazardous exhaust fumes in their day-to-day operations.
