Background
A wide variety of contaminants can be released into the water environment (egg through permitted discharges, accidental release, surface runoff and natural erosion). Once part of the water environment, contaminants can become associated with sediment through physical mixing or chemical reactions.
Contaminated sediment can pose environmental risks and present problems for the planning and delivery of constructions, management and maintenance activities in the water environment.
Contaminated sediment: a guide for risk assessment and management is available for order.
Objectives
This event will explore how risk that contaminated sediments poses should be assessed and managed in the UK. It will also highlight innovative approaches in other countries.
It will also highlight good practice developed by the new CIRIA report C781 Contaminated sediment: a guide for risk assessment and management.
