PFAS - what are they and why should we care?

This event will discuss why construction professionals in the UK should pay more attention to Perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS ) and how to assess and manage that risk

Background

Perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS )are a group of  man-made substances used in  many  industrial and consumer products such as carpeting, clothing, fire-fighting foams, metal plating in  stain repellents, polishes, paints, and coatings because of their water, oil and heat resistance properties.  There is evidence to indicate that soils and groundwater in certain locations within the UK have been impacted by these substances.

PFAS has caused many issues in other countries e.g. US and Australia both of which have developed guidance on how to manage and mitigate their use.

Awareness of PFAS is not high in the UK, it is however a regulated contaminant according to Environment Agency.

UK practitioners would benefit by ensuring they are aware and are prepared  to deal with their risk.  We look to learn from other countries on how to manage PFAS risk as at present there are very few places where they can access help.

Why attend

This event will:

  • raise awareness of the subject among practitioners for UK projects
  • encourage practitioners to learn from other countries and become better in managing risk related to PFAS
  • provide networking opportunities and sharing of good practice and experience
