Construction over abandoned mine workings

This half day event will launch CIRIA's update to SP32 Construction over abandoned mine workings that was first published in 1984 - a seminal publication that has been widely used across industry for more than 30 years.

PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED

Background

Since the publication of SP32 Construction over abandoned mine workings in 1984, the numerous issues associated with abandoned mines are progressively being better understood, with significant advances in knowledge and expertise. The deep coal mining industry has been run down, and this has coincided with increased urbanisation and regeneration of land in areas of former mine workings.

Supported by industry, principally The Coal Authority, a project to update SP32 has been underway for several years. The new Abandoned mine workings manual (C758D), retains much of the information from SP32, but with substantial updates in dealing with the effects of the mining legacy. It also provides further guidance on the planning regime, environmental considerations, legislative framework, and health and safety issues.

CIRIA C758D offers a risk-based, non-prescriptive approach to the mitigation and remediation of mining legacy issues covering the geographical area of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is aimed at regulators, planning authorities, developers, asset owners and operators, consultants and contractors.
