Grouting for reservoir dams - a guide to good practice

Those who will benefit from this guide include reservoir owners, asset managers and engineers concerned with the design of new dams, inspection of existing dams and those undertaking remedial works such as grouting contractors.

Background

Two published documents by the Environment Agency (2009) and Chesterton and Warren (2016) identified priority areas for research projects aimed at drawing together good practice, operational experience and recent developments in the management of existing UK dams. One important area identified was grouting in embankments, forming grout curtains and cut-offs as well as the sealing of dams and foundations. However, over the years the proposal for a good practice guide moved down the list of projects in terms of priority and yet a document was being requested by owners, reservoir managers and engineers because of the lack of available information on grouting. Currently, no UK -specific document covering these important aspects exists, so the necessity for such a document has called for the development of this guide.

Why attend?
This publication aims to provide comprehensive guidance to most aspects of grouting to help those with little knowledge about grouting and to support and provide extended information for those who have some knowledge of grouting. In addition, it will be of use to those who wish to know more about this subject. This guide also serves to remove elements of misunderstanding and to reduce over-reliance on judgement.
