Background
Worldwide, we are witnessing construction programmes and infrastructure investment plans of immense scale. Collectively these are supporting social and economic growth. Climate change is a further major factor necessitating investment in coastal infrastructure to improve national resilience.
Irrespective of the socio-political drivers, all these initiatives require considerable resources. The winning of marine sand and gravel is playing an increasingly important role in meeting this demand. The European marine sand and gravel sector has made considerable progress in terms of environmental and technical performance over the past 25 years. This conference will provide an insight into how the sector is responding to client needs including recent developments in the sector at a policy, resource mapping and environment performance level.
However, while European performance is improving, there is increasing coverage in the media of poor practices internationally in terms of the winning of minerals, particularly sand which makes it even more important that good practices are disseminated.

Conference objectives

Sailing from the NOC berth, this trip will highlight some of the infrastructure relating to marine sand and gravel in the estuary. It will also identify other significant commercial and industrial infrastructure in the area. The trip will last approximately 90 minutes.
