The challenges & future of slope engineering and management
A half-day seminar launching CIRIA's research project (RP1065) Engineered and natural slopes - protection and stabilisation systems. The seminar will broadly outline slope engineering and management challenges and debate the future of slope engineering and management.
Background
Over the course of 2018 CIRIA, in partnership with Atkins, BAM Ritchies and Maccaferri, will be hosting a series of roundtables and workshops to identify, categorise and prioritise future good practice research in slope engineering and management.
Protecting and stabilising slopes is widely recognised as a highly skilled and specialised area encompassing a plethora of hard and soft engineered elements. The techniques and products available on the market are extensive and the ability for practitioners to determine best-value and good practice can be challenging. Furthermore, many specialist professions and suppliers can be involved in the design, specification, installation and/or management of measures.
Slope face and near surface instabilities, particularly for linear assets, are a mounting concern to those tasked with managing critical infrastructure assets and sustaining vital local infrastructure services for customers, businesses and nearby communities. Uncertainties associated with climate change and extreme weather events mean the application of slope protection and stabilisation systems continue to be widely used while the significant geotechnical risks associated with major infrastructure projects like High-Speed Two will push the boundaries of slope design and management.
Objectives
- Launch CIRIA’s slope engineering and management research prioritisation initiative
- Broadly present current slope engineering and management challenges
- Discuss the future of slope engineering and management
