Risk Assessment & Remediation of Contaminated Land for NI
This event will explain the most up-to-date aproaches in risk assessment and management of contaminated land in Northern Ireland. It will highlight how difficult contaminants such as asbestos and emerging contaminants eg PFAS should be dealt with. A series of local case studies will be used to demonstrate good practice
Background
The Northern Ireland Regional Development Strategy to 2035, Building a Better Future, published in 2015, has a target of building 60 percent of new homes within the existing urban footprint. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has recorded approximately 14,000 brownfield sites. There are many benefits of redeveloping Northern Ireland’s e.g. many are in desirable locations, and well connected, with roads and utilities.
In Northern Ireland, most contaminated land is dealt with via the planning system. Planning officers have to consider a wide range of issues for this process. In many cases, it is difficult for them to be kept up to date with latest development with risk assessment and management of land contamination. Similarly practitioners also need to be refreshed with new knowledge such as recent progress with soil screening values, how to deal with difficult and emerging contaminants, management of contaminated soil as waste, etc.
Why attend?
This course will:
- give you an overview of the latest NI legislation, permits required and guidance related to land contamination
- explain risk assessment process including Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessments
- explain how generic and detailed quantitative risk assessment criteria should be applied and up date you with latest developments e.g. the Category 4 Screening Levels Phase 2
- discuss remediation options available and the emerging approaches for commonly found contaminants e.g. asbestos, PFAS etc, highlighting management of contaminated soil as waste.
There will be workshops in the afternoon to examine some of the above issues.
