Delivering Green Infrastructure on Linear Assets - Launch

Launch of Phase One Scoping Study for CIRIA's RP1046, Delivering Green Infrastructure Along Linear Assets which will demonstrate the case for utilising Green Infrastructure to enhance the performance of Highway, Rail, Water and Energy networks.

Background
Linear assets (for energy, transport and water) provide significant opportunities to create networks of multi-functional green infrastructure. These can bring additional benefits including biodiversity, climate change adaptation and mitigating impacts from surface water runoff, noise and air pollution. Effective planning, integration and management of green infrastructure can enhance the resilience of linear infrastructure assets and reduce whole life costs. Implementing green infrastructure into new build linear assets and retrofitting into existing situations can deliver multiple benefits and improve provision of natural capital.

This event represents the culmination of Arup’s research for CIRIA’s Phase One Scoping Study; Delivering Green Infrastructure Along Linear Assets RP1046, which demonstrates the case for utilising Green Infrastructure to enhance the performance of Highway, Rail, Water and Energy networks. This study follows the Linear Infrastructure Network’s (LINet) brochure entitled “Maximising linear infrastructure resilience, environmental performance and return on investment”, released in November 2016. It is anticipated that the scoping study will lead to a comprehensive guidance document as part of Phase two project during 2018.

Case studies, critical success factors and lessons learnt will be presented by the research team and infrastructure providers, designers and strategic operators. These will represent good practice from strategic rail, highway, water and energy infrastructures.

Why attend?
Attendees at this event will:
  • Hear directly from the project team at Arup about how the scoping stage of this comprehensive project has evolved;
  • Understand how critical success factors, and lessons learnt gained from case studies can inform strategic planning, design and operation of linear assets by integrating green Infrastructure;
  • Discuss integrated GI and linear assets with project authors and a panel of strategic providers from linear networks;
  • Have an opportunity to identify project outputs that may be transferable to their businesses / assets;
  • Develop understanding of how GI can enhance the performance of strategic assets, by making greater efficiencies, improving productivity and resilience, and offer returns on investments.
