Delivering SuDS not duds in residential developments
This susdrain event will demonstrate approaches and the benefit of good interaction between local authorities, deveolopers and their consultants. It will discuss the different approaches to deliverintg SuDS schemes for two residential developments initiated over the last seven years.
This is a free susdrain event.
Background
CIWEM’s, A Place for SuDS report and the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) select committee’s reports on flood risk outline the challenges and opportunities of delivering SuDS, particularly in residential developments.
The English non statutory SuDS standards have been in place for over two years, however examples of good SuDS that comply with these Standards (let alone deliver more than flood risk management) are rare. The transition from the traditional approach to draining developments to managing rainfall close to its source and on (or close) to the surface through well designed SuDS remains a challenge for some. This is primarily due to challenges around the allocation of long term maintenance responsibilities and obtaining effective engagement between developers and local authorities that have a knock on impact on the planning and design of SuDS schemes.
This susdrain event will highlight the benefits of good engagement between local authorities and developers for all concerned and the role of champions in terms of delivering cost effective schemes that manage flood risk and also provide a better environment. It will also highlight the implications of ad hoc approaches to the adoption of SuDS. Presentations will be provided by those working in local authorities and the consultants involved in designing and maintenance of SuDS for developments within their area.
The seminar will specifically cover the aspirations, drivers and policy hooks for successful SuDS delivery in different developments in Oxfordshire. It will also outline some of the challenges being faced on residential developments and how consultants (and the developers they work for) are working around these to deliver and maintain SuDS.
Why attend?
