Structural Health Monitoring Systems - Civil Infrastructure
This scoping project will determine what guidance is required for those specifying and managing structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. CIRIA will use the findings from this workshop to develop a research proposal for good practice guidance and present a range of relevant case histories informing approaches to specify the latest innovations.
This is a free invitation only workshop. Expressions of interest are welcome and should be sent to [email protected]
Background
CIRIA’s latest guide (C764) Hidden defects in bridges – guidance for detection and management (to be published in May 2017) identified the potential for SHM systems to greatly assist in bridge management. However, the same principle would apply to the management of a broad range of civil infrastructure including seawalls, dams and tunnels. While many techniques are available and large quantities of academic research in existence there is no authoritative guidance available for asset owners to identify where SHM may be useful or how to specify it.
As a broad principle, it is suggested that SHM specification is performance rather than method based to ensure future proofing of the specification. In addition, it is recommended that the specification is based on what is required to be measured rather than necessarily explicitly stating how the measurement is to be made. Early involvement of SHM specialists at scheme design stage or earlier is also recommended.
CIRIA intend to further the recommendations set out above during this scoping phase, while collating good practice approaches and case studies.
Why attend?
Delegates at this workshop will:
- Identify guidance requirements to improve the specification and application of SHM to civil infrastructure
- Accumulate good practice approaches and case studies for inclusion on a CIRIA web-page
- Inform the development of a research proposal.
