Introduction
The design and operation of culverts is critical to effective flood risk management. Inadequate design or neglect can lead to severe flooding. This training, based on CIRIA C689 Culvert design and operation guide (CDOG) supersedes CIRIA R168 (1997), provides guidance on the whole-life cycle of culverts, recognising that there is an enormous stock of existing culverts of various types, sizes, age and condition.
This training course provides asset managers and designers with a comprehensive understanding of the whole life cycle of a culvert, providing guidance on inspection, assessment, maintenance and renewal of existing, culverts, as well as their design. The training is underpinned by the principles of whole-life asset management and a systems approach to drainage. Guidance will be given on cutting edge hydraulic assessment techniques, taking account of developments in hydrology and hydraulic analysis.

Trainers
Chris Fosbeary | Royal Haskoning
Chris has 20 years’ experience of the design and operation of river and flood defences, highway bridges and culverts. He has been involved in numerous projects involving the inspection, refurbishment and replacement of culverts for the Environment Agency, navigation authorities and highways authorities. Chris was a contributing author to the CIRIA Culvert Design and Operation guide (C689).
Jeremy Benn | JBA Consulting
Jeremy has over 33 years’ water engineering experience working in the UK and overseas. He has published and lectured widely on the subjects of flood estimation, hydraulic design of structures and flood risk management. He has been involved in the feasibility and detailed design of irrigation, drainage, flood walls, and storage reservoirs, ranging from culvert replacements to multi-million pound flood alleviation schemes. He has contributed to the CIRIA Culvert Design and Operation Guide (C689) the update to the CIRIA Scour Manual, and is currently working as a contributor on the CIRIA Weirs best practice guide revision.
