Waste management for contaminated land - can we do better?

This event will explore how waste from brownfield sites is managed, highlighting site issues and the legal obligations of the different stakeholders. It will also explore how to classify and deal with waste, particularly hazardous materials in a safe, environmental and cost-effective manner.

Background
Managing soil arisings and waste in brownfield projects has always been an important and sometimes difficult issue with the complexities of deciding “when a waste is not a waste” and when it is, how to classify and safely handle, store and dispose of that wate, to comply with the relevant legal obligations.

The CL:AIRE Definition of Waste: Development Industry Code of Practice (DoW CoP) has provided some help to practitioners in deciding when soil may not be waste.  Similarly, the WRAP Quality protocols have helped determine which materials cease to be waste when recycling soil arisings and demolition material. However, many brownfield projects, even after the application of the waste hierarchy, are left with surplus soils requiring disposal and the intricacies of classifying a waste, frequently heterogeneous in nature, are often baffling to the non-expert.

Why attend?
This event will explore:
  • legal obligations
  • waste handling - how to decide if the material should be disposed, recycled or reused.
  • how to deal with, and classify waste, particularly hazardous materials in a safe, environmentally and cost effective manner
