Innovation in Flood Risk Management in the UK
This seminar will cover the benefits and approaches to innovation in flood risk management. This includes innovations in engagement with communities and stakeholders, as well as the planning, design and maintenance of flood risk management infrastructure.
Background
Innovation in flood risk management can improve resilience and deliver better and additional outcomes from our limited funding. Set this within the context of funding for flood risk management not increasing at the same pace as flood risks innovation pretty much becomes vital. “Business as usual” is unlikely to deliver the level of flood risk management this country needs and we need to look at managing our flood risk from a variety of sources differently.
Innovation is not something that just happens. Organisations and partnerships need to have the right environment, culture, processes and technology to facilitate innovation. This seminar explores the role of innovation in flood risk management in terms of influencing what is built, as well as how it was cost effectively planned, designed and managed. The seminar will also explore the innovations used in developing effective partnerships and engagement with communities to help them manage and become more resilient to flooding.

Daniel will highlight the UK’s flood risk, the context for greater resilience
and the need for innovation in the planning, design and management of
flood risk management infrastructure.
15:00 Innovation in delivering multiple benefits from flood risk management
Fola Ogunyoye, Royal Haskoning DHV
Fola will provide an overview of the approach and value of designing and
building flood risk management infrastructure that provides multiple
benefits both in the UK and internationally.
15.20 Building bridges and grass roots change
Francis Comyn, Rochdale Borough Council
Francis will explain their approach to engage communities and business
in the Rochdale and Heywood pathfinder project and how the innovations
have provided a longer lasting legacy for improved flood resilience.

Matthew Kuhn, TEAM2100 / CH2M
Matthew will present some of the innovations being developed
for the Thames 2100 project and how they can help with the asset
management of infrastructure managing risks from various flooding
sources.

Steve Barnbrook, Calderdale Council
Steve will outline some of the innovative proposals that have developed
from the work of the Flood Commission setup following the winter
flooding of 2016.
