Greening of non-building assets in historic & urban settings
This workshop will bring together academics and industry to discuss the underlying science of how GI can improve the multifunctonality of hard assets and key drivers to improve implementation GI.
This workshop is free to attend. Interested delegates should contact Dr Larissa Naylor or Dr Susan Fitzer outlining their interest in attending and relevance to current role.
When & Where
Wednesday 20 January 2016
CIRIA offices, London
Background
This workshop will be held as part of the short-term EPSRC funded capacity building project 'From innovation to widespread implementation: improving the sustainability, resilience and multifunctionality of hard infrastructure'.
The project aims to identify drivers, successes, needs and challenges in moving from innovation to widespread implementation in terms of Green Infrastructure (GI). Following a scoping exercise to identify key gaps, this collaboration event seeks to identify the strategies, research questions and key partnerships required to develop projects to generate the evidence base required to move from innovation to widespread application. On the topic of multifunctional living walls on non-building assets in cities, we would like this workshop to develop industry-academic partnerships, identify research questions and study sites, and funding mechanisms for this work.
The potential for retrofitting existing non-building hard infrastructure assets using GI principles is often overlooked but is key to delivering wider GI networks. Existing greening of hard assets has typically been restricted to living walls and roofs on buildings. This workshop aims to extend the research of greening of hard assets to non-building features in urban landscapes (e.g. free-standing walls, bridges, pavements), drawing from recent innovation in the heritage conservation and civil engineering sectors.
This workshop will bring together academics and industry to discuss the underlying science of how GI can improve the multifunctonality of hard assets and key drivers to improve implementation GI. Key leaders in this field are attending and will give short soundbite talks to facilitate active discussions including: Prof. John Dover, Staffordshire University and Simon Odell, Landscape Institute.
