Structural stability of buildings during refurbishment

about the more common types of failure, which can be referred to by all

Background
The refurbishment of existing buildings is a large proportion of the
building work carried out in the UK. Much of the work is carried out by
smaller developers and contractors and even as self-build. Issues of
structural stability often arise and in some cases there have been
collapses. Sometimes the people involved were trying to save money by
not appointing a structural engineer to advise or they ignored the
advice received, but in many cases the dangers were simply not
appreciated.
This project aims to meet a need for accessible guidance
about the more common types of failure, which can be referred to by all
involved.
The work is being carried out as a CIRIA project funded by CIRIA core
members, HSE, LUL and the ICE Research and Development Enabling Fund.
The funding bodies, together with representatives of relevant industry
bodies, form a Project Steering Group.
