Background
The best Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) tend to be those that have been considered early in the planning and development process, with timely engagement of the relevant stakeholders and disciplines. The importance of interaction between SuDS design and the planning process has been appreciated by practitioners for some time and has been considered by Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFAs) since early discussions around the Flood and Water Management Act.
Successful integration of SuDS design and the planning process enables the delivery of high quality cost effective SuDS. Getting the interactions right not only improves the performance of schemes in terms of flood risk and water quality, it can also positively contribute to biodiversity, amenity and effective land use. Integration is also vital in ensuring that viable schemes are delivered for the developer and the eventual organisation undertaking maintenance.
The DCLG Ministerial statement in December 2014 states that Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) will ensure that SuDS are implemented for major developments and working with Lead Local Flood Authorities is promoted, particularly around the approval of SuDS. Recognising the opportunities and potential challenges of this approach, this seminar will explore the interactions between SuDS design and planning, the work already being undertaken between LLFAs and LPAs and what the direction of travel could be.
Who should attend?
This seminar will be of interest to those involved in the technical design and planning of SuDS in local government, consultancies and developer organisations. It will reinforce the process and benefits of integration and collaboration and will provide an opportunity to share good practice, experiences and concerns. Delegates will gain:
- A better understanding of the key principles and practices behind successful delivery of SuDS
- An understanding of how the SuDS design process can integrate with the planning and development process
- A useful insight into how some local authorities are collaborating internally and with external partnerships to facilitate successful SuDS delivery
- A chance to discuss and share the opportunities and challenges of integrating SuDS design and planning.
