5th EMSAGG conference - Marine sand & gravel

The 5th EMSAGG conference 'Finding common ground - marine sand and gravel', will take place on the 4 - 5 June 2015, in Delft, Netherlands and builds on the success of the four previous EMSAGG conferences, bringing together those actively involved in this area to share knowledge, research and best practice case studies.
  
Join industry experts and stakeholders for a two day conference and site visit to discuss current opportunities and challenges in the dredging industry.
  
Overview
As well as looking at technical developments in seabed mapping and monitoring, the 2015 EMSAGG conference will explore the role of a responsible dredging industry in moving towards a sustainable outcome and aims to highlight recent developments in the dredging industry, discuss current challenges and opportunities across Europe and explore the role of a responsible dredging industry in moving towards a sustainable outcome.

Programme

An engaging and varied programme of topical presentations, panel discussions, poster exhibition and industry showcase. The conference programme will examine three broad topic areas with summary presentations and panel discussions in each: Extraction of marine sand and gravel – monitoring and impacts; New technologies and developments; and Marine spatial planning.

Following an open call for abstracts, the conference will be exploring a range of topics both technical and non-technical including:

  • New technologies and developments in exploration, operational and extraction and their applications
  • Marine spatial planning, monitoring and sea bed optimisation with a focus on the EU Marine Strategy Framework, considering progress with implementation of the directive
  • Extraction of marine sand and gravel – monitoring and impacts.

The programme includes speakers from Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Model, the Crown Estates, Ministry of Infrastructure & Environment Netherlands, Geological Survey of Denmark &Greenland (GEUS), Abeko, MarineSpace Ltd and others.

Exhibition and networking:
An exhibition of industry sponsors and project posters will be showcased during refreshment breaks, lunch and evening drinks reception, during which delegates will be able to network.
   
Site visit:
The conference will also include a presentation and tour on the Sand Engine / Sand Motor, south of the Hague, a pioneering approach to coastal management, on the following day, 5 June 2015.
 
Key note panel discussion:
The key theme of the conference, Finding common ground is on reconciling the needs of different stakeholders – whether in terms of environmental protection or potentially conflicting use. Focusing on this theme, the conference keynote panel will discuss: Finding common ground – Towards a sustainable sand and gravel extractions: challenges and opportunities.

  • Importance of marine aggregate as a material and availability of resources
  • The shift from land based aggregate to marine
  • Competition of resources for defence and construction material
  • Harmonising conflict and political issues
  • Learning from other countries and role of EMSAGG.

Introduction to EMSAGG
The European Marine Sand and Gravel Group (EMSAGG) has facilitated information and knowledge sharing in the industry since 1998.
It identifies and disseminates developments and information that is needed and enables wider interest groups to participate in knowledge sharing and discussion of these issues.
