Background
Since the industrial revolution began more than 200 years ago, the UK has developed a legacy of land contamination. The remediation of contaminated land is an important stage of many construction projects.

Since the implementation of Part II in 2000, practitioners and local authorities have steadily improved the way they manage contaminated land with the support of government guidance.

However, the government’s support to the industry has diminished significantly in the past few years; and practitioners, from both public and private sectors, continue to be challenged by a number of issues.

Recently a number of some industry-driven initiatives have started, including S4U values and SAGTA’s’ proposed C4SL values for more contaminants. However, the impacts of these initiatives are not yet clear.

CIRIA has a strong track record in delivering sound and useful guidance to help the construction industry. CIRIA has produced over 40 outputs, including good practice guides, contaminated land reports and online training. Many of these, although have no legal status, are used as industry standards.

CIRIA will continue to provide useful and relevant guidance to support the contaminated land sector.

This event will discuss ways that different stakeholders can overcome the challenges that face the contaminated land industry, these include:
  • Risk assessment and management of contaminated land
  • How current practices respond to ‘new’ issues, such as flooding
  • How to comply with existing and new legislations.
