This seminar will explore what can be done to assess and manage groundwater flood risk and provide an overview of approaches taken by some of the local authorities to manage risks within their area following the past winter’s flooding.

Ticket information
This event is free to attend.
Please note that priority for attendance will be given to Local Authorities.

Background
The assessment and management of groundwater flood risk is difficult when compared to approaches for river or surface water flooding. Groundwater flooding is also the least understood or researched source of flooding. The last major review was part of  Making Space for Water in 2007, although work on site specific issues by the Environment Agency, academia and consultants has continued since.

Groundwater flooding is sometimes unrelated to heavy rainfall, occurring days or sometimes weeks after rainfall. The water often doesn’t appear where you would expect and it may rise through the floors of buildings. The flooding may also occur for a long time, often lasting for several weeks.

Lead local flood authorities have a responsibility for assessing and managing flooding from groundwater. Groundwater flooding incidents during the winter of 2013/14 in south London, Hampshire, Sussex, the south west and elsewhere have highlighted the challenge of managing flooding from groundwater sources.

This free seminar will explore what can be done to assess and manage groundwater flood risk and provide an overview of approaches taken by some of the local authorities to manage risks within their area following the past winter’s flooding.

Who should attend?
This seminar will be of interest to those assessing or managing groundwater flood risk, either from a consultancy, local authority or other risk management authority. It will provide an update on latest research and provide an opportunity to share information and good practice. Delegates will gain:
  • a better understanding of the key aspects of groundwater flooding and specific flood risk assessments
  • an overview of approaches to manage groundwater flood risks, particularly property level flood protection
  • a useful insight into the approaches adopted by local authorities to assess and manage groundwater flood risk.
