Overview

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) provide a fantastic opportunity to improve our places and spaces. They achieve this by managing the risk of flooding and diffuse pollution from sites as well as enhancing biodiversity and improving amenity. The recent (September 2014) government consultation on SuDS suggests underpinning these objectives will be key to guarantee the right outcomes for surface water management.

While SuDS provide a fundamental drainage function they offer much more than an approach to attenuate runoff and manage volumes from sites. SuDS provide a wide range of benefits and with good design these benefits can be delivered with little or no extra cost on most sites, making substantial improvements to the quality of the local environment.

Recognising that surface water should be managed for maximum benefit, this free seminar explores the drivers and approaches behind achieving the core benefits  in water quality, water quantity, amenity and biodiversity  all of which will be supported in the update to the SuDS manual. The presentations will present evidence and case studies of what can be achieved when you consider the full potential of SuDS.

Who should attend?
This seminar will be of interest to those both new to SuDS and those who feel comfortable with the SuDS approach. It will reinforce the SuDS principles and provide an opportunity to share good practice on SuDS design with experts. Case studies will demonstrate what can be achieved and how challenges can be overcome.

Delegates will gain:
  • A better understanding of the key principles and practices behind successful delivery of SuDS
  • A chance to discuss the opportunities and challenges of delivering SuDS to deliver multiple benefits with other colleagues and disciplines
  • A useful insight into the contributions that different disciplines can make to good SuDS design. A civil engineer, ecologist and landscape architect will be presenting and will be available for questions and discussion.

14:00    Registration, refreshments and networking

14:30    Chairman’s introduction
Graham Fairhurst, Susdrain Chair

14:40    Designing SuDS to manage flows and volumes
Anthony McCloy, McCloy Consultants
Anthony will provide an overview of using SuDS to manage flows and volumes from a site. His presentation should help demystify the technical requirements to ensure effective and functional SuDS schemes.

15:05    Designing SuDS to manage water quality
Theo Thomas, Thames 21
Theo will provide an overview of the drivers for managing water quality and provide an overview of some of the schemes he’s been working on in and around Greater London.

15.30    Designing SuDS to enhance biodiversity
Sacha Rogers, Penny Anderson Associates
Gerard will provide an overview of how SuDS can be used to enhance biodiversity, providing information on design considerations/criteria and sharing case studies.

15.55    Designing SuDS to deliver amenity
Kevin Barton, Robert Bray Associates
Kevin will provide an overview of using SuDS to deliver imaginative schemes resulting in  high quality amenity spaces and places. The presentation will cover design considerations/criteria and examples of what can be achieved.

susdrain
susdrain is an exciting community that provides a range of resources for those involved in delivering sustainable drainage systems (SuDS).

SuDS help to manage flood risk and water quality and provide a range of amenity benefits that create great places to live, work and play. With the need for SuDS greater than ever before, www.susdrain.org provides up-to-date guidance, information, case studies, videos, photos and discussion forums that help to underpin the planning, design, approval, construction and maintenance of SuDS.
