Background
Since the introduction of CLR 11; Model procedures for management of land contamination, the risk assessment process for contaminated land has expanded and evolved in the UK. Models have been refined and site investigation approaches modified to ensure that the correct data is collected and analysed.
The risk assessment process is an iterative process starting with a Generic Assessment moving on to a detailed site specific Quantitative Assessment as needed. However, the process has not been straight forward, in places 'background' levels of some contaminants are in excess of Generic Screening Criteria and could result in SPOSH (Significant Possibility of Significant Harm) in terms of Human Health, Ecological Systems and Property or Significant Possibility of Significant Pollution of Controlled Waters. Additionally the 4 Category Screening Process introduced in the revised guidance, has resulted in the development of new Category 4 Screening Levels for some contaminants of concern considering low rather than minimal risk. This is a significant change in the risk assessment approach in the UK.

10:15 Risk assessment process
The first module will provide an overview of the approach to risk assessment in the UK.
10:45 Land use, Conceptual Site Model, significant contaminant linkage
This module will discuss the Conceptual Site Model as introduces within the Statutory Guidance and used within a risk assessment. The Source Pathway Receptor relationship will be reviewed and the methodology used to determine linkage. The methods used to determine Significance of the linkage will be presented.

11:45 Normal contamination
This module will discuss the issues surrounding some contaminants which may be found at concentrations considered to be ‘high’ when compared to Generic Assessment Criteria. It will introduce the concept of Normal concentrations to represent those contaminants which are normally elevated in a locale or region and methods used to determine if the measured concentration is Normal or anomalous. Included within the module will be a discussion of a number of contaminants of concern for whom it is important to determine Normal contamination levels.

13:30 Generic assessment criteria and data uncertainty
The appropriate use of Generic Assessment Criteria in the risk assessment process will be discussed. The Module will discuss data uncertainty and methods used to assess uncertainty.
14:15 SPOSH categories 1-4 and C4SL
Determining the significance of risk to Human Health and Water according to the Categories presented in the revised Part 2a guidance. This module will also give an insight of the forthcoming C4SL.
14:45 SPOSH ecological systems and property
This module will present the receptors considered and differences between Significant Harm and SPOSH.
15:15 Workshop session
Participants will be undertaking an assessment site data provided to assess risk using a generic approach and determining if contamination is normal.
