Background
Trees play a multifunctional role in the built environment and are important components in green infrastructure as they not only improve the environment, but also the overall sustainability of city and urban life.
While most people ‘like’ trees for their aesthetic value, more recently, trees have been better known in regards to their other benefits such as reducing urban heat-island effects and slowing down rain water flow. There are an increasing number of studies across the UK and other countries which demonstrate the benefits of planting and maintaining trees within an urban environment.
However, trees can also cause problems such as subsidence, obstructing sewers etc. Planning and managing urban trees is an important part of long term sustainable green infrastructure, as the right tree should be planted at the right place with good long term management.
This event will:
- demonstrate the benefits and costs of trees in UK urban environments.
- discuss issues relating to planting and managing trees in the urban environment.
- highlight problems that can occur with urban trees and ways in which these could be resolved.
- provide networking opportunities.
